The general census conducted in 1385(2006) shows that of 64 million of Iranian population aged 6 and over, more than 54 million have been literate (84 %). 28 million and 835 thousand are male (88.7%) and 25 million and 247 thousand female (80.3%). In this year, one million and 347 thousand adults has been educating under Literacy Movement courses system.
During academic year 1385-1386, there have been 15 million students, of which 5 million and 827 thousand pupils attended the primary school. In this year, approximately 610 thousand volunteers have been admitted to the Center of Excellence of Education as well as Islamic Azad University; of this, 287 thousand have been male and 322 thousand female.
In the course of academic year 1385 -1386, nearly 2829 thousand students have been studying in Centers of Excellence of Education, Islamic Azad University as well as Payam-e-Nour University. It shows 18.4% increase in comparison with the previous year. Of said figure 52 % have been female and 48% male. In the said academic year, 737 thousand student have been studying in associate grades( 26.% ) , 1911 thousand in bachelor courses ( 67.6 % ), 118 thousand in Master courses (4.1%) and 63 thousand in Ph.D., in different majors ( 2.2% ).
